Sometimes, You Need To Take A Look Back…

Sometimes, when I need inspiration going forward, I take time to look back. One of my favorite projects from the past was with an amazing client in Montclair, New Jersey. A common style home in this area was a modern gambrel and the consistent feedback from families was that they wanted to maintain the original look of the exterior but when they walked in the front door, they wanted a bold, modern design.
I loved the challenge of these designs because designing the interior of these homes meant that I could start from scratch. Very little of the original homes were kept and we could work with bold paint colors, wallpaper and tile. I get inspired when people are willing to try out color, even if it's just a bit. It's a fun line to ride between pushing the client a little bit out of their comfort zone and giving them exactly what they are looking for!
The thing most people don't know about, and what ended up being the biggest challenge about this project, was that I had to design most of this project virtually and trust my gut on every decision made. During this time, we had already moved back to Boston from New Jersey. I actually got a call from a client THE DAY BEFORE our U-Haul was leaving for our new home in New England. Oh and just to add to the excitement, I worked on this home with a newborn and a toddler! We traveled back and forth as a family. I had a ton of fun looking through old pictures of this project and our family at the time together. I loved getting to work on this home and created a sleek and modern design that captured the essence of the homeowner. For me, looking back has me looking forward to new inspiration in 2024!
