TIPS & TRICKS INTO THE DESIGN WORLD

Have you ever wondered... how does someone become an Interior Designer?? And how do they get a show on HGTV?? Today, we will tackle that first question! We are going to take a peak into our founder's (Denese Butler) background, how she made her way into the design world, and a few tips and tricks to break into the design world today!
Denese started off her career by studying Fashion at the University of Bridgeport and after graduation, her first job out of college was a retail store that had an interior design room! Designers would come and Denese would assist them with picking out textiles and fabrics for their custom pieces. Her title was a “Textiles Librarian” (don't you just LOVE that title?!). This was such a great first step into the design world because there were thousands of fabric books from different brands. Denese really got to know the different textiles and how to use them through this role.
She then took a jump into fashion because of her school background and passion for the industry. This turned into a deep dive into fashion for three years, three LONG years. It was incredibly intense and while Denese loved the pace, something was missing. She had to take a break and had an "all things creative sabbatical".
You know the saying, "absence makes the heart grow fonder"? During that break time, Denese continued to apply to jobs but shifted her focus back to the textiles world. Although the pace was still fast in the design world, Denese realized how much she LOVED textiles for interiors once she stepped away from it. During her time as a "Textile Librarian," Denese developed great relationships with the fabric company reps that came to the showroom. Through one relationship, she was able to connect and learned about a possible opening at one of her favorite textile brands. Romo always stood out as a luxurious, modern brand which Denese naturally gravitated toward. While it wasn't a straight forward start (it actually took nine months for Denese to get the job!), she stayed with the company for four years. Once her first son, Ellis, was born, she wanted to shift to a part time schedule and ended up having to quit the job she loved so much. While Denese never thought she would stay at home, or really go to any other job, this change in her career ended up opening the door for a business opportunity and The Perfect Vignette was born! And as they say, the rest is history!!
Now, you may be wondering, how do I get into the design world in 2024? Since Denese has transitioned from "Textile Librarian" to "CEO and Founder" of The Perfect Vignette, here are a few tips and tricks to make your designs stand out and get your foot in the door.
  • You MUST have a social media presence. As soon as Denese receives any interest for a job opening, she takes a peak at their social media pages to get an idea of their style and experience. What is their taste? Do they know how to put a mood board together?

  • Use what you have! Haven’t designed any rooms? Share school projects you have worked on. Updating your bedroom? Take progress pictures to share before and afters on social!

  • Take the extra step. Don’t DM an employer asking for info on how to apply for a job. Do the work and find the job posting through their website or a job board like Indeed.
